Santa Monica

Santa Monica is a happy unification of the natural and the urban: clean air, beautiful beaches, scenic mountains, plus a pedestrian-friendly downtown, hundreds of fine-dining options and several pleasant shopping streets. The best of the beach breezes, as evidenced by the many pedestrians, bicyclists, in-line skaters and skateboarders. Not to mention the always fun segway tours in Los Angeles are offered around the area, these offer a great tour around the every-popular SaMo beach down to the Marina, great place to pick up some fish and chips. Nearby neighborhoods that line Pacific Coast Highway—Venice, Marina del Rey, Playa del Rey, Malibu and Topanga among them—have distinctive personalities.

Main Street

Main Street is the site of the Santa Monica Convention and Visitors Bureau Information Center (1920 Main St., 310.393.7593) and is a quieter, lower-key destination than the lively Third Street Promenade.

Third Street

Shops and cafes are open late at pedestrian-only Third Street Promenade (from Broadway to Wilshire Boulevard). The street entertainers are always captivating, as are the street vendors.

Marina Del Rey

Marina del Rey boasts the largest man-made, small-craft harbor in the world and activities such as bicycling and sailing; something I take place in quite often.

The Boiler

Whenever I drive around new locations, i’m always looking for someplace new to eat. I crossed by The Boiler, a very “meat friendly” place for people like me. It’s just a smorgasbord of meaty meat-tastic goodness. People sit at counters surrounding stainless steel jacketed kettles at this Cajun and Creole restaurant, then chef’s prepare food  tailored to suite your spice comfort-level. Couldn’t ask for much better; well of course, other than something to enjoy after a crazy awesome indoor skydiving california adventure. Getting back to The Boiler; items such as Gumbo, jambalaya and pan roasts — lobster, crab and clam — are just a few of the items that make this Inland Empire restaurant a popular spot.

Descanso Gardens

Just 20 minutes away from the hustle and bustle of busy Downtown Los Angeles lies 150 acres of gardens, preserved by the founder in the 1950′s. Today you can stroll through the rose, iris, camellia, Japanese or Flower gardens to discover some of the most beautiful flowers in the world. Adults and children can discover the grounds via the Enchanted Railroad, a replica of a diesel train, or by tram. Once the rain subsides, this would be a good reason to make some Los Angeles tour plans. This spring, you can get involved in their Fitness Walks and Yoga program, take your tot on a Toddler Treks, or join one of their horticultural classes.

LA NBA All-Star Events

Feb. 18–21. The ultimate battle for basketball bragging rights, the 60th NBA All-Star Game, returns Feb. 20 to L.A. for the fifth time and ushers in with it a host of NBA-related events.  Special events include the Jam Session (Feb. 18–21), which invites fans to play the massive court and meet NBA players and legends, plus the All-Star Practice (Feb. 19) (all at L.A. Convention Center, 1201 S. Figueroa St., downtown, 213.741.1151) With this being such a popular event, it’s only fitting to have this occur in La. I’m betting this would be a great mid-day event session right after heading to the beach on perhaps, oh, I don’t know, some amazing segway tours Los Angeles fun; this is where you get excited. Other events include the FIT Run, Walk & Dribble 5K race, beginning and ending at Staples Center, in which participants race for coveted tickets to the game.
