Ennis House – Our Private Architecture Tour Stops By
Private Tour Goes to Great Los Angeles Home
Most of our private Los Angeles tour guests love to see the large homes and gardens of the movie stars that we show them in Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Holmby Hills and Hollywood. Some, we are pleased to say, prefer us to show them some of the historic homes notable for their architecture. Many of these incredible residences are memorialized in film and television for their beauty and design aesthetic. As such, our guests are very familiar with them and see them as we approach. Others are not so public but still fitting for a tour of remarkable homes and buildings in the area. One home in the former, familiar category, is the Ennis House, Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1924 Los Feliz masterpiece, built for Charles Ennis, a men’s clothier. Built in the Mayan brick style this was Wright’s anointed “favorite” of the four similar homes he built. From The House on Haunted Hill (a classic Vincent Price horror film) to Bladerunner to Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the television series), the Ennis House is well-represented in movies, television, commercials, music videos and photo advertising. Owned now by Ron Burkle (who also owns Greenacres, the Harold Lloyd estate in Beverly Hills) and under the auspices of the Ennis House Foundation the home’s restoration is nearly complete. Designated a landmark by federal, state and city historic preservation agencies the building will continue to look out over Los Angeles and certainly be seen in future films and television shows.
