Hollywood History at the Rainbow Bar & Grill
So Much History, So Little Time on a Los Angeles Tour to Tell It
Some places that we visit along the Sunset Strip as we drive between Beverly Hills and Hollywood have been there a long time (as we Californians account for time). One of those grand destinations is the Rainbow Bar & Grill which opened formally in 1972 with a party for Elton John. That’s not very old, we know. However, before it was the Rainbow Bar & Grill it was the Villa Nova and owned by director Vincent Minelli (husband of Judy Garland, father of Liza). Great Hollywood celebrities of the more distant past ate, drank, danced and sang there (Marilyn Monroe met future husband Joe DiMaggio there in 1952) while more recent luminaries occupy the present incarnation of the restaurant. Our guides can entertain their guests with the interesting stories and scandals associated with the building. The building deserves its own history book.
