Lifeguards Not Popsicles at this Los Angeles Beach Stand

Summer Arrives at Los Angeles Beaches

You have to get to the beach pretty early to see the colorful lifeguard stands closed up.  As you would expect Los Angeles has lots of busy beaches.  Busy enough and with stories enough that you certainly remember that popular television show starring David Hasselhoff that dramatized the lives of Los Angeles County Lifeguards. Since 1914 this division of the Los Angeles Fire Department keeps wary eyes on 30 miles of beaches and 70 miles of coastline.  Approaching 800 lifeguards during our busy summer season these first responders are trained not only in swimmer rescue but also in rescue boat operations, underwater rescue and recovery, swift water rescue, cliff rescue, marine mammal rescue and marine firefighting.  When we fly low close to the water along Venice and Santa Monica beach heading to Malibu while on a private Los Angeles helicopter tour we are humming the theme song to that popular television show and reciting the lifeguard motto: “Watch the water, stay in shape, do the right thing.”
