Malibu Playhouse Presents
Serious Theater in Malibu After a Fun Private Tour
Malibu Playhouse is producing the west coast premiere of David West Read‘s The Dream of the Burning Boy. The play opens this Friday, September 6th. This is the first production under the aegis of the theater company’s new artistic director, Gene Franklin Smith. Theater lovers visiting Los Angeles, like art lovers, often overlook the quality and quantity of our stage work believing us to be a “movie town” disinterested in theater. Ha! We have more small theater in constant production than New York. How is that? Lots of theatrically trained talent resides here: writers, directors, actors, designers, musicians, and on and on. What do they do between film and tv gigs in Hollywood? “Hey, kids, let’s put on a show!” So, like Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, theater pops up all around the city, not just in formal theater spaces. The Malibu Playhouse has been around since 1990 staging award winning plays with familiar and honored talent. We expect The Dream of the Burning Boy to be as well received as it was in recent east coast and midwest productions. This play probes the effect of the unexpected death of a young man on his teacher, sister and fellow students, how loss brings insight and new life. Enjoy great theater in our oceanside community even if you are not visiting the city and enjoying a private Los Angeles tour experience.
