The Hollywood Bowl When It’s Just a City Park Is a Fun Private Tour Stop
We often come down Cahuenga Boulevard from the Hollywood Hills and into downtown Hollywood. This route takes us right past the entrance to the fabulous Hollywood Bowl. Many people, even locals, do not realize that the Hollywood Bowl is managed by Los Angeles County and is really a well-manicured and nicely maintained park. Grassy areas, picnic tables and walking paths are all around the amphitheater. There is the Hollywood Bowl Museum for those on our Los Angeles private tour wanting to see photographs of the various band shells that have adorned this music mecca since the early 1920s as well as multitudes of celebrated performers and celebrity audience members over almost 100 years. Despite being an outdoor performance space that today seats almost 18,000 music lovers there have been numerous renovations and improvements over the years to accommodate modern acoustics, modern musical instruments and changes in audience expectations for this kind of entertainment. After all, we need really good film projection systems to watch The Sound of Music during its annual sing-along and clips from all the John Williams movies when he is here almost every summer conducting the orchestra. During the summer months when the bowl is active we might not arrive early enough to get close to the stage as preparations for that evening’s performance are underway. During the months when the facility is quiet we have complete access to the seating and stage. Kids can enjoy climbing the steps to the top of the amphitheater (where they can see the Hollywood Sign above the shell) and future stars of theater and film can step onto the stage to belt out a favorite song (a capella, of course).
Our Private Tour Looks Close at the Hollywood Bowl
We are only a month away from the start of the 2016 Hollywood Bowl Season. The kickoff event is always the Playboy Jazz Festival hosted once again this year by the hilarious George Lopez. This two-day event brings to this historic location the best music and the best people to enjoy an ongoing feast of sounds in beautiful Los Angeles weather. Less than a week later the official opening of the Bowl will be an evening with Steely Dan and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Enjoying a concert is this grand outdoor facility (a city park in actuality) is fun for the music and for the opportunity to be somewhere where people have been gathering under cloudless skies for almost 100 years. There is even the Hollywood Bowl Museum that we take our private Los Angeles tour guests to visit. Everybody who is anyone in the musical world feels wildly fortunate to be invited to entertain at this venue. But music comes in many forms and in a neighborhood famous for creating film blockbusters you must consider coming here for a movie sing-a-long. The first is at the end of June – the Sound of Music sing-a-long. Itself an annual event (one of Hollywood’s favorite things) the audience comes dressed in lederhosen and habits, full Austrian attire, and with picnic baskets filled with foods suitable for an outing in the Tyrolian Alps. This is just the start of a summer full of classical, ethnic, country, rock ‘n roll and special events. We love our summers when the Hollywood Hills are alive with the sound of music.

Private Tour Destination
The Hollywood Bowl is an impressive outdoor amphitheater that we love to take our private Los Angeles tour guests to see during the day when we can. As the bowl is a city park we have pretty good access even during the summer concert season unless there is a rehearsal in progress or something special and secret is happening in which case smiling staff will usher us away while telling us to come back later. Our younger more energetic guests like to climb the stairway to the top of the bowl for the exercise and for the views over the top of the band shell into the Los Angeles basin. You can even see the Hollywood Sign from the very top. Most of our guests want to walk close to the stage where so many world-renowned performers, groups and orchestras have entertained an enthralled audience over the years (since the 1920s). During the off season when the amphitheater goes unused we can tread the boards ourselves and ask our starstruck visitors to belt out a song or tell a good joke. Coming up this week on the concert schedule is British singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran. Coming up Friday is one of the most popular annual events held at the bowl, the Sound of Music Sing-along. Appropriately costumed film lovers will bring their sausage and beer filled coolers and as they watch the film join with the cast singing all the great tunes in the show. This year is even more special as it is the 50th anniversary of the movie.

He may sing about Coming to America but our guests coming to Los Angeles for a private tour just want to belt out a Neil Diamond hit as they pose for a group photograph in front of the Hollywood Sign. The Hollywood Bowl appearance of the popular singer/songwriter is this Saturday and, as is always the case, there will be 17,000+ fans rocking and rolling to their favorite hits in that world famous hillside amphitheater. Our guests found songs to sing throughout their sightseeing excursion and their guide joined in on Play Me and Kentucky Woman.
Plan a Private Tour Around all that Jazz
The first Playboy Jazz Festival back in 1959, hosted by Hugh Hefner, was set in Chicago which was Playboy headquarters at the time. Then Hef moved the business west to Los Angeles and settled in the Playboy Mansion in Holmby Hills, a popular destination with most of our Los Angeles private tour guests. He resurrected the tribute to great jazz music in 1979 at the Hollywood Bowl and the tradition was started and continues to this 37th annual jazz music festival. On June 13th and 14th the show will continue with two long days at the most historic music venue in Los Angeles, an outdoor Eden for music lovers of all kinds but especially for jazz music lovers that weekend. The eclectic collection of musicians will offer something for every ear and every heart. Among the talent: Herbie Hancock, Eddie Palmieri, Ozomotli, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Tower of Power, Snarky Puppy and many more. Two days. Outdoors in beautiful weather. Picnic. Wine. The good company of music lovers from all over the world who plan to be in Los Angeles just for this occasion. Make your own plans and get your tickets early. There is seating for only 17,000 or so jazz fans.
Our Private Tour Enjoys a Quiet Visit to
the Hollywood Bowl
The 2015 Hollywood Bowl season has been announced and tickets are flying out the door. Opening the season – Journey. There is abundant entertainment to be enjoyed at this historic music venue right in Hollywood. Sing alongs, movie nights, fireworks, world music, full symphony orchestras and more celebrities than you can shake a sound clapper at will fill the nights (and some afternoons) at one of the best outdoor arenas in the land. Our view from above on this private Los Angeles tour is from the aerial portion of our sightseeing excursion as we circle above the bowl on the way to see the Hollywood Sign. We will double back in our luxury SUV after the flight and enjoy a nice walk through the park surrounding the bowl and get a close up look at the amphitheater and stage during this off season time. This is really the best time for sightseeing at the bowl because it is open to the public and just a well kept public park with a really nice history museum. During the season the amphitheater becomes off limits as concert preparation goes on.
Los Angeles Tour Groups Enjoy the Hollywood Bowl Park
Seating more than 17,000 people, the Hollywood Bowl is the largest natural amphitheater in the country. Opened in 1922 in the area then known as Daisy Dell, the Hollywood Bowl has been a mainstay of Los Angeles performance and entertainment for almost a century. Now that spring has arrived it is time to peruse the Bowl’s calendar for the 2014 season and decide which performances to attend. As always, the season begins in June with the arrival of the Playboy Jazz Festival which has inaugurated the season every year since 1979. George Lopez will MC the weekend event this year and will host many of your favorite jazz stars from around the world. The official season kicks off on the 21st of June with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra‘s opening day performance. Expect lots of symphonic evenings, international music and the ever popular movie sing-a-longs. John Williams will host two nights of his music in film. Big stars under the stars with a touch of fireworks. Bring your picnic or have your meal catered. We love bringing our private Los Angeles tour guests by the park during the day when you can explore the grounds without crowds and visit the Hollywood Bowl Museum.
Our Tour Telescopic Lens Is As Good as a Telescope
This is a lovely overlook above the Hollywood Bowl with a sweeping view of Hollywood to downtown Los Angeles with the Hollywood Freeway (the 101) stretching between the districts. Located right below Ron Howard‘s Hollywood Hills home this is a well-maintained vista point with signs and history providing us with good starting points to tell our private Los Angeles tour guests stories about the development of Hollywood and the reasons we are all gathered here today.
Hollywood Bowl Lights Up The Night
The beauty of the spectacular Hollywood Bowl 4th of July Fireworks Show is that it lasts 3 nights. This year you can buy tickets to hear Josh Groban on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, July 2nd – July 4th. This is such a Los Angeles/Hollywood thing to do that the 18,000 seat amphitheater is guaranteed to fill up each of the nights. And take our word for it, any concert at the Hollywood Bowl is spectacular, this is just more so. If you have never attended an event at the world famous Hollywood Bowl this is a good time to plan one. There are a number of fireworks shows during the season but for the Independence Day celebration nothing is spared. Also, Josh Groban is a local boy, a Los Angeleno, with an international following and a bizillion likes on his Facebook page. So pack up your picnic stuff, bring your favorite wine, cheese and desserts and plan to join a whole lot of patriotic music lovers for an unforgettable evening. Also, like our private Los Angeles tour guests, you can swing by the park early to visit the Hollywood Bowl Museum and walk the grounds.
Pilgrimage Play Theater Tribute on our Private Tour
So many old Los Angeles landmarks remain only in vintage photographs like this. However, this structure, locally known as the Hollywood Cross, remains today in all its glory after 90 years. The cross stands atop a knoll overlooking both the Pilgrimage Play Theater (now the John Anson Ford Theater) pictured above and the Hollywood Bowl. At 32-feet tall and fully illuminated at night it is a wonderful landmark for us to point out on our private Los Angeles tour. This homage to Pittsburgh Paint Co. heiress Christine Wetherill Stevenson honors her contributions early in the last century to the construction of the Hollywood Bowl and the Pilgrimage Play Theater where her Pilgrimage play was performed most summers from 1920 to 1964. Today the cross is owned and maintained by Hollywood Heritage.
