Get a Great Look at the Hollywood Sign on Your Private Tour
This particular road sign is increasingly popular around Hollywood these days. Understandably there are neighborhoods and neighbors who dislike the convoys of tour buses chugging up and down their streets in an effort to get their customers to a good vantage point to see the famous Hollywood Sign. We sympathize as we ourselves are neighbors in Hollywood and find ourselves sitting in tourist traffic when we have important errands to run. Keeping that in mind we avoid the most traveled routes when we can and take advantage of a smaller vehicle (our luxury SUVs only carry six passengers) and our intimate knowledge of the roads and paths all through the Hollywood Hills. We drive as close as we can and walk the rest of the way if our guests are willing. We even encourage our hiking tours to enjoy a walk up a dusty service road along the side of Mt. Lee that ends up above and behind the tall white letters that everyone is so excited about. Even more important, our guides know the best places and poses for photographs with the sign in the background. Talk about a perfect souvenir of a private tour in Los Angeles. Individual and group pictures will fill our guests’ tour photo album, pictures they can share on the favorite social media sites and images that can grace their next holiday season card. By all means let us do the driving (and photographing) while you just sit back and relax and enjoy the sights of Los Angeles.
This Private Tour Family Wanted to Be in the Company Blog
While we give thought to having passed 2,000 blogs on this website we thought we might use this moment to divulge a bit of how we do things here at Elite Adventure Tours. We schedule and provide hundreds and hundreds of tours each year from hotels all around the Los Angeles area. Sometimes we even meet our guests at the airport or cruise ship terminal, Union Station or at a private home where they are staying with friends or relatives while they visit Los Angeles. Our guides immediately inform (or remind) them that the sightseeing tour they are about to experience is a custom tour. Where do they want to go? What do they want to see? Hollywood and the film studios? Beverly Hills and celebrity homes? Venice Beach and the Los Angeles coast? There is so much to see and do that part of creating a guided tour is getting to know who is with us in our luxury SUVs. Then we inform (or remind) them that we have a fancy digital camera and will photograph their tour so they have their own photo album afterwards. The pictures will be posed and candid and everyone will be in them (no missing dads on our tours). These are the photographs that make it into our blogs. Our guests have to give us permission in each case to use their pictures. Sometimes, like today, our guests not only sign the permission notice but they insist we write about their tour and use a picture or two. We take special note of that and when that blog publishes we make certain that our guests’ tour guides have the blog link to send to them. OK, that does mean a lot of blogs about the Hollywood Sign. We are cool with that because, well, everyone sightseeing in Los Angeles wants us to take them as close as we can (even hiking right up behind the sign).
This Private Tour Guest Can Spell Hollywood
You don’t have to be big to enjoy a private tour of Hollywood. Our littlest guests love the twisty turns of the roads we take up to the great Hollywood Sign. Like their parents their jaws drop when we take them to our secret spot to first see the sign up close. Such big letters on the mountainside and they spell them out in grand Sesame Street style (we will take them to see Kermit the Frog when we return to town later). And, for their parents, we get many good photographs of the kids reveling in the wide panorama of Hollywood and the sea seen from this lofty perch just beneath the landmark sign. The kids want to know how tall each letter is (45 feet) and how long the sign is (350 feet across). Mom and dad are more interested in when the sign was erected and why (1923 to advertise a new housing development called Hollywoodland). Yes, four letters from the original sign are gone (as are the lights) these days and the film industry appropriated the novelty of the attraction for itself. It was Hollywood, though, that saved the sign in 1978 (thank you Hugh Hefner and friends) with a complete restoration. Thanks, too, to Sherwin-Williams for a repainting and restoration job four years ago. According to our young guests all the sign needs now is a giant swing underneath. Hear that, Hollywood?
Our Private Tour Can Be More Than a Walk
We understand that sitting in a tour bus with a bunch of strangers, looking out the windows while listening to a scripted description of what is passing by can be, well, boring. Why not enjoy a custom private Los Angeles tour with a guide who will not only take you to the best sightseeing destinations in and about the city but let you get out of our luxury SUV and walk around. Feel free to pose for pictures taken by your guide that can go into your photo album along with all the candid photos that you will not have noticed being taken until you share your album with friends and family. More than just walking around Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Venice Beach we can lead you on short (or long) hikes through the hills to see Los Angeles from places where only the locals know where to go. For instance, we can hike up a service road, past the old Batman television series Batcave (and other notable films and shows) all the way to the top of Mt. Lee where our guests will find themselves right behind the Hollywood Sign – Raise the “W”! Another easy and fascinating hike is up into Runyon Canyon where Hollywood and history come together. Plus, it’s good exercise. Eating the fancy snacks we keep in the vehicle will be negated by the good workout from our hikes. Enjoy VIP treatment on a luxury tour designed to suit your interests…from Hollywood to the stars (at Griffith Observatory or the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel).
Our Private Tour Guests Love This Photograph We Take
So many of our guests are wearing sunglasses on their Los Angeles private tour that when we drive into the hills to show them the Hollywood Sign up close we have an opportunity to not only capture their first look at the great historic billboard but we also can see the sign reflected in their Ray-Ban glasses. This is always a favorite photograph among all the photos we take of our guests as we explore Hollywood and Beverly Hills and then maybe head over to the coast for some sightseeing through the L.A. beach communities. Their tour photo album from us is always treasured even when they are taking their own photographs. We can tour for hours if our guests are interested. That’s a lot of pictures. Maybe today, after all the Thanksgiving feasting, doing some hearty walking around and hiking in the hills and along the ocean’s edge will be a good way to spend the day. Of course, it is also Black Friday, so it’s a good thing we have a lot of spare room in our SUVs for packages if sightseeing becomes shopping on Rodeo Drive, Robertson, Melrose and Montana and other exclusive shopping areas where the movie stars roam. The beauty of our custom tour is we can change direction and intention as we go along.
Our Private Tour Learns About the Chaparral Flora and the Rainy Season
We Californians are outdoorsy. Especially here in the southland. Nice weather almost every day of the year means there is no excuse not to go hiking in the hills around Los Angeles. We bring our Los Angeles private tour groups up to see the Hollywood Sign which can involve a nice walk through the nearby hills. Walking through the tall grasses and shrubs allows our guides to talk about our climate and ecology which we all learn even outside of school. There are informational signs along the hiking trails and bulletin boards at the trailheads and all kinds of trail maps, books and websites which instruct us on why things are the way they appear. For instance, our rainy season is now beginning (on the early side of normal) which means the brown vegetation will be rejuvenated with the rainfall and cooler temperatures and turn green. The summer brown season becomes the winter green season. Insect stages will progress and we will see different forms of our familiar bugs. In some ways it is Spring in October and November. Like Camelot, though, we get our rain mostly at the end of the day and through the night. Daytimes tend to be clear and temperate. Perfect for sightseeing! If it does rain, don’t worry, we bring along umbrellas and still provide a fantastic Los Angeles tour adventure for our guests.
We Expect This When Our Private Tour Arrives in Hollywood
Our guides are so experienced they know just where to stand as their Los Angeles private tour guests follow them up any of a number of pathways to an extraordinary view of the Hollywood Sign. We always take a number of photographs of the guests getting their first unobstructed look at the giant white letters looming above them on a steep hillside above Lake Hollywood and the Los Angeles basin. Unposed and completely spontaneous. Thankfully we have high quality digital SLR cameras to quickly capture everyone’s immediate response. It’s like seeing Old Faithful or a unicorn for the first time. Maybe even an NFL team in Los Angeles. Oh, there is…welcome (back) Rams! Plan your trip to see Los Angeles, Hollywood, Beverly Hills and the beach communities from Venice to Malibu and expect to receive a tour photo album with many surprised expressions on your family’s faces.
Get Your Gang on a Los Angeles Private Tour
Certainly it is fun and rewarding to travel with your lover or your family and enjoy a vacation in beautiful Southern California. We see the joy in the faces of our private tour guests all the time as they become excited to see the homes of the movie stars and the historic destinations all around Los Angeles from film studios to cemeteries, grand architecture to beach cottages. We also know that the most excitement and the biggest laughs are when we have groups of friends aboard. Enjoying sole use of our vehicle and very knowledgeable (and dare we say handsome) guides with their fancy cameras we truly stretch the meaning of custom tour. Celebrity wine bars, running paths, stretches of beach favored by familiar faces, tracking down locations from favorite movies and television shows, silly photographs everywhere we go (Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Malibu)…we really create some extraordinary memories for our guests which explains why we see some of our guests again for a reunion tour here in sunny Los Angeles. Let us know when you and your friends are coming our way and we will work out an excellent adventure to remember always.
This Private Tour Was All About the Goop
Three young lads and a bucket full of slimy yellow goop made their way in our luxury SUV all around Los Angeles including this stop up by the famed Hollywood Sign. The boys insisted on posing for photographs with oozing slime dribbling from their hands. They even wanted us to use the photos in one of our Los Angeles private tour blog postings. We never want to disappoint our guests so, boys, here it is. The boys learned about the Hollywoodland Sign and its origin as a giant billboard for the housing development just below dating back to the early 1920s. The boys learned about our Mediterranean climate and chaparral ecosystem and how little rainfall falls in our beautiful city with the big blue ocean clearly visible nearby. They learned about the charming Lake Hollywood just below that once provided drinking water to the growing neighborhood and which today is maintained more for emergency use. They learned about coyotes and rattlesnakes present all around them as we explored the Hollywood Hills. They learned about Castillo del Lago (Castle of the Lake), the giant estate right by the Hollywood Sign once owned by gangster Bugsy Siegel and later by Madonna. What did we learn with the boys? Their goop is pretty much the same as the goop of our childhood. Boys love goop.
Our Private Tour Is All About the Pictures
Everyone takes pictures on vacation, right? It is expected. In this modern age when cell phones double as cameras a family visiting Hollywood can return home with bazillions of digital images from every family member’s phone. We encourage this on every private Los Angeles tour we do. We also bring our own digital SLR camera so that the family can have photographs with everyone in the picture. We also bring our experience from years of exploring the city and thousands of tours that let us know where and how to get the best photos at each destination. We have a lot of fun getting great candid pictures of our guests seeing the Hollywood Sign for the first time or the kids climbing on the giant sloth sculpture at the La Brea Tar Pits. Maybe the women just want to pose in front of DASH before going in to “browse” in the glamorous boutique and maybe pose again after with their packages. The guys are more likely to strike Arnold Schwarzenegger poses either at the handprints in the Grauman’s Chinese Theater forecourt or when we are at the ocean exploring Muscle Beach. Even our snapping a shot of our guests having a “selfie” moment is worth putting into their tour photo album. It is sort of a “behind-the-scenes” shot and perfectly appropriate for Hollywood.
