Even The Playboy Mansion Rear Entrance Impresses Our Private Tour
Driveways of the rich and famous make for a very interesting part of almost all of our Los Angeles private tours. Wrought iron gates and carriageways, curving pavements through elaborate portals, sculpted hedges and well-tended flowerbeds are all a part of the ride through celebrity neighborhoods that we make with our guests. While we suggest homes to visit that we believe will appeal to our particular guests almost all of them get excited when we mention the Playboy Mansion if they have not already requested it to their guides. The Playboy Mansion, for sale since early this year, is a very impressive structure up on a hill as we usually approach it from Sunset Boulevard in Holmby Hills, one of the ritziest subdivisions of Los Angeles located between Beverly Hills and Bel-Air. Driving around the property brings us to this back gate, the busiest gate around with near constant traffic into and out of the esteemed residence. We see all sorts of unusual activities and always look forward to checking out goings on at the estate. This visit to the home of Hugh Hefner and his bunny companions is even better when we have flown over the property on a 1-hour aerial tour in our luxury helicopter. Our guests then have a good idea of Hugh’s neighbors and his proximity to the Los Angeles Country Club. Not that Mr. Hefner is a golfer. He has plenty to keep him occupied without ever having to go through one of his impressive gates.
Our Private Tour Stops at Playgrounds for
Children and Adults
Holmby Hills was once home to the Tongva Indians, later a Spanish rancher and finally in the late 19th century belonged to a family that developed the neighborhood into a special enclave of very large, beautiful and expensive homes. Holmby Hills is part of what is known locally as the Platinum Triangle (along with Bel Air and Beverly Hills). We spend a good amount of time with our private Los Angeles tour guests driving through this well manicured district pointing out homes associated with such familiar names as Spelling, Bogart, Hefner, Jackson, Affleck, Benny and Mansfield. We also find it a fun place to make a stop during the tour for stretching and restrooms. The playground in this park area is perfect for small children needing a chance to expend some extra energy accumulated during the drive from Hollywood. Our more senior guests enjoy watching the lawn bowling for a while. If our guests bring along appropriate golf equipment there is even a fine pitch & putt course to stretch their legs and arms and improve their form.
Our Los Angeles Tour Guests Feel the Excitement
Sightseeing with our private luxury tour guests around Beverly Hills last Sunday gave them a chance to feel the Golden Globes excitement mounting in the area. The Goodyear blimp came up from its base in Carson, CA (just south of Los Angeles) to provide aerial photography for the television coverage of the first of the many Hollywood award shows to come this season. From Holmby Hills and the many celebrity mansions we enjoy visiting with our clients we could see the blimp hovering over the Beverly Hilton where the prestigious award show has been hosted since 1961. As you might expect, the closer we got to the hotel the more traffic we encountered but it was worth it to show our visitors the red carpet entrance and all the press, promotion and security activity around the hotel. In many ways, just another Hollywood day – perfect weather and film stars walking around in fine clothing.
Private Tour Aids AIDS Walk
What a surprise it was recently when our private Los Angeles tour guests were driving past the Playboy Mansion in Holmby Hills and stopped on the road by none other than Crystal Harris, Mrs. Hugh Hefner. She invited everyone over to the lemonade stand by the back driveway to her house where she and her playmate friends were raising money for the 2013 AIDS Walk coming up in a couple of days. Turns out Playboy Enterprises raised almost $17,000 for their efforts. And, the lemonade was quite good and refreshing on a hot October day. Our guests had a lot of pictures and autographs to show their family and friends when they got home.
Like Moses parting the Red Sea a beautiful woman can get the gates to the Playboy Mansion in Holmby Hills to swing wide open. It is a beautiful summer day as we pass by with our guests who are enjoying a private, custom luxury tour of Los Angeles. We had already taken them up to the Hollywood sign (up to the sign!) and walked them along the Walk of Fame. Then we traveled through West Hollywood on the Sunset Strip and into Beverly Hills. Just past all the magnificent mansions full of Hollywood celebrity history is the rolling enclave known as Holmby Hills. That’s where Hugh Hefner created his palatial headquarters back in 1971 after having purchased the 1927 Arthur Kelly-designed gothic-tudor mansion. Oh, the stories that could be told.
