Our Private Tour Takes Us Up into the Mountains
Mulholland Drive is the great skyline drive in the Santa Monica Mountains running from Hollywood to the ocean. While the entire drive is full of jawdropping landscapes between views of the San Fernando Valley and the Los Angeles basin there are also exquisite looks at the ocean and various canyons, hillside mansions and fabulous driveways. The twists and turns over most of the road keep us going slow and allows your guide to tell lots of tales and provide lots of facts. Along the way there are “overlooks” where we can easily pull over and step out of the SUV to take pictures and admire the view. This particular view gives our Los Angeles private tour guests a look deep into the valley and three major film studios: Universal, Warner Bros. and Disney. We counsel our guests to look for the water towers to spot the studios. We can drive down into the San Fernando Valley at some point if are guests are interested and take a look at the studios from their entrances and point out the water towers. The vista points are spectacular and in many ways as wonderful as the aerial perspective our guests enjoy when aboard one of our helicopters and flying over and around the city.
Here Is a Universal View for Our Private Tour
The wonder of Los Angeles is its topography. It is basically a tidal plain bordered by highlands and mountain ranges. What that means is we have numerous locations to drive on a private Los Angeles tour where we can pull over and walk to a constructed vista point or perhaps just a clearing in the brush and enjoy an expansive panorama of Los Angeles and its neighboring cities. The view with our guests above is taken up on Mulholland Drive (named for the engineer responsible for bringing water to the growing city early in the last century) in the Hollywood Hills. We are looking north over the great San Fernando Valley. Just below us is Universal City and Universal Studios. Off to the right are Warner Bros. Studios and Disney Studios. It is cloudy and cool enough to wear long sleeves this bright late fall day though with a little hiking we warm up so it is always wise to dress in layers. We have places we love along Mulholland Drive where the view is to the south over the Los Angeles basin with Santa Monica Bay in the distance. On clear days like today we would be able to see Santa Catalina Island 23 miles off the coast and the Palos Verdes Peninsula rising up along the Pacific Coast Highway (“PCH” in the local vernacular). On another part of the drive we can point our guests to the north where there might be snow on the San Gabriel Mountains, Mt. Baldy in particular, and perhaps a view of the San Jacinto Mountains in the distance. Our guides say it makes them feel like Hobbits on a ring quest when they look out at these vistas with adventures and mysteries ahead in the distance.
Looking for some fun on a Friday or Saturday night this summer? Our guests aboard one of our private luxury tours in Los Angeles always ask us what we recommend. We suggest a drive up into the Santa Monica Mountains along Mulholland Drive (the drive itself is fun!) and arriving at Malibu Wines for some outdoor music and wine tasting. You should bring a picnic and sit out on the lawn with your friends while bands and solo artists perform music you know and music you want to know. The schedule also includes music during the day both Saturdays and Sundays. Visit the Malibu Wines website for more information.
And since we all love films, Thursday nights are Movie Night.

We like the skyline views of the city and try to capture the photos whenever we can from wherever we are. We take our private luxury tour guests up in the Hollywood hills and follow Mulholland to some excellent scenic overlooks where you can see downtown Los Angeles in all its glory.
