Sea Serpent Found in Catalina Bay

Not a Usual Sight on Our Private Catalina Tour

Our guests and readers know we visit Catalina Island regularly throughout the year on our private luxury tours.  Besides the usual island trekking by foot, jeep and golf cart, soaking up the magnificant landscapes and ocean air, we might be there to enjoy eco-ziplining or for a special film or concert event.  Another favorite activity of many of our guests is scuba diving and snorkeling.  Catalina Island waters are famous in southern California for these activities.  The island offers calm waters in protected bays and lots of marine life to examine.  One thing we never see is an oarfish like the one brought on shore the other day by a group of sailing school students.  This rare find is not even the largest speciman to date as the creature can grow to 56 feet or so.  Seen by marine biologists as the King of Herrings, the oarfish is the longest bony fish in the world.  Traveling singly and preferring depths far below scuba capabilities these fish rarely interact with humans.  This Catalina specimen was discovered already dead in shallow waters near the shore which is how the aquatic monster is generally seen.
