Beautiful Bridge to Somewhere

Aerial Photo of the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles

Before director Tony Scott’s tragic leap on August 19th, many Los Angelenos didn’t even realize our city is home to the 4th largest suspension bridge (1,500 ft.) in California (and one of the top 85 in length in the world).   It’s called the Vincent Thomas Bridge, named after the San Pedro legislator who fought hard for its construction in the late ’50s.   The bridge connects San Pedro with Terminal Island.

It opened on November 15th, 1963 — 7 days before the assassination of President Kennedy.  The bridge has been featured in several movies, but most notably in 1985’s To Live and Die in L.A.

We took the aerial photograph above while on a helicopter tour of Los Angeles with guests who wanted to see the gigantic Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the largest port facility in the U.S.  The photo below was taken when picking up another private luxury tour group from the cruise ship dock in San Pedro, just beneath the western approach to the bridge.

It will forever remain in the shadow of San Francisco’s majestic (and much larger) Golden Gate Bridge, but L.A. has one too, and it’s beautiful.
